by Bokksu Staff

Kit Kat has released over 300 different flavors. Some have been mildly successful, and a few have failed woefully. Then there are others that have been smash hits. One of these insanely successful products is the Japanese lemon Kit Kat.

The product is also known as the Kit Kat Tokyo Island Lemon. No matter where you find it, you can expect a premium treat flavored with lemon from an obscure Japanese island.

Introduction to Kit Kat Japan Tokyo Island Lemon

Lemon Kit Kat is one of the latest additions to the Japanese Kit Kat flavors. It contains the taste of lemon sourced from the island of Ogasawara, which sits off Tokyo’s coastline. The Tokyo Island Lemon Flavor Kit Kat consists of individual crispy wafer bars covered in chocolate infused with specialty lemon. It has a yellow packaging with traces of green.

Kit Kat Tokyo Island Lemon is not the same as Kit Kat Lemon Crisp Candy Bar. Although they have some similarities in name, packaging, and ingredients, the former is a regional taste that uses premium ingredients from the Tokyo area.

The shima lemon is a specialty citrus fruit in Ogasawara, a group of islands many hours away from the metropolis but still considered a part of Tokyo. Known for its sweet taste, large size, and green skin, shima lemon is a key ingredient in this Kit Kat regional product. It’s only available in Tokyo City, making it pretty rare.

The Launch of Lemon Kit Kats

Tokyo Island Lemon Kit Kat was released in late 2022 as part of Kit Kat’s gotoichi (regional) taste series, which began in 2002. At the time, the Lemon Kit Kat became the latest addition to the series, joining the likes of Yubari Melon, Okinawa Sweet Potato, and Uji Matcha Kit Kats in the lineup. The release of Tokyo Island Lemon was the next step in Nestlé’s attempt to promote tourism in Japanese cities through rare regional flavors. It’s arguably the most famous Kit Kat in the collection.

What Does Lemon Kit Kat Taste Like?

The shima lemon Kit Kat possesses a zesty, tangy, and refreshing taste similar to that of the iconic fruit. It contains natural, high-quality ingredients, including chocolate, lemon oil, and crispy wafers. The tanginess of the lemon infusion balances out the sweetness of the chocolate and wafers, making lemon Kit Kat one of the most appealing flavors ever released by Nestlé in Japan.

Why Japanese Kit Kats Stand Out

If you’re a fan of chocolate bars, you should know that Japanese Kit Kats are quite different from those made for Western regions. They come in flavors that appeal to the Japanese palette with little to no consideration of Western consumers. The result is a series of unique, region-specific flavors that are different from what the average chocolate consumer is used to seeing in classic options, such as Birthday Cake and Strawberry Cheesecake Kit Kats.

Japanese Kit Kats, along with domestic brands such as Meiji, Fujiya, and Morinaga, are among the most famous chocolate brands in Japan. They all stand out by using unconventional flavors such as matcha, sweet potato, caramel pudding, wasabi, red bean, and cherry blossom. Japanese chocolate also includes a lot of seasonal and limited-edition flavors.

Tokyo Island Lemon: A Flavor Inspired by Japan’s Islands

The Tokyo Island Lemon Kit Kat was inspired by the Ogasawara Islands (or Bonin Islands) that lie about 1,000 kilometers outside Tokyo. The archipelago is one of Japan’s citrus-rich regions. Shima lemons, also known as Ogasawarajima lemons, grow in abundance on these islands. Hence, their unique flavor was added to the Kit Kat.

Rare Kit Kat Flavors You Should Try

Due to their region-specific, seasonal, and limited edition nature, Japanese Kit Kats are some of the rarest finds in the world. Let’s take a look at a few unique flavors:

  • Nagano Shinshu Apple: Shinshu is the old name for the region that is now Nagano Prefecture. It consists of authentic apple extract and a sweetened milk chocolate combo.

  • Kyushu Amaou Strawberry: This regional flavor uses exotic strawberries from Kyushu island.

  • Hokkaido Melon: This Kit Kat combines dark orange melon from Hokkaido Prefecture and sweet cheese made with milk from the same region.

  • Kyoto Hojicha: It consists of authentic tea powder sourced from the birthplace of roasted green tea.

Kit Kat Japan as a Gift: The Perfect Souvenir

Japan’s regional Kit Kat flavors, like Tokyo Island Lemon, are often packaged beautifully for gifting. They come in colorful paper boxes designed with images of the main ingredient, such as lemons, apples, or strawberries. Each piece of candy is individually wrapped in recycled plastic.

How Lemon Kit Kats Compare to Other Japanese Kit Kats

Unlike other fruity Kit Kat varieties, the Tokyo Island Lemon flavor tastes less acidic, thanks to the mild acidity of shima lemons. The lemon gives the chocolate a green tint. The flavor is also more complex than the classic Kit Kat varieties, offering both sweetness and tartness.
